We often think about what makes us different from our neighbors and what unites us. Both, our differences and commonalities are addressed in the Patricia O’Brien’s contemporary oil portraits. Our distinct set of facial characteristics define us as an individual and separate us from each other.  The range of emotions which play across our faces unites us all.

When creating her contemporary oil portraits, Patricia O’Brien paints a crowd, one person at a time. She decodes the messages we communicate about mood and feelings by studying facial structures, then recreates those messages in paint with a measure of loose brushstrokes and unexpected bits of color. The paintings are on the verge of a narrative, revealing pieces of a story through expressive eyes, but leaving that story for the viewer to decide.
